4 Hard Downs: Super Bowl Lived Up To Billing
Got to see my mom before watching a game that was super fun
What a Sunday:
-Wife gets sick
-Mom’s Birthday Dinner
-Super Bowl
Saturday was very chill but Sunday was a weekend eater going into the week with the double event. However, love my mom, my niece and nephew plus got to remind my brother about “Star Crunch” that dad put in our lunchboxes.
Like. Every. Single. Day.
They were nearly untradeable at the lunch table. But we had them and just figured it out.
Let’s get it, SPOT THE BALL!!!
1st Down: Fumbles and Field Goals
Two ways you can’t win football games.
200 yards to get 9 points. You can’t win that way. 48 yard drive to the KC 27 and Christian McCaffrey fumbles it away. 46 yards to the KC 33 and they have to settle for a field goal. 40 yards to the KC 35 and they can’t get much but a field goal. 66 yards in overtime to the KC 9 and a field goal that ultimately activated new overtime and gave them the loss.
Field goals are the “Prevent Defense” of the offensive side of the ball. You’re one play away from them not just taking the lead but putting you down bad. Two field goals gets you 6. One play can get you 7. You’re down 1.
Not good football math.
2nd Down: Chris Conley Played His Ass Off
He’s not the star of the show. He’s a teamer and a down the line wide receiver. However, he had two great special teams tackles and downed a punt that was epic to create awful field position for the Chiefs.
He was my favorite part of the game that wasn’t both defenses, which we will get to.
Shout out to CBS and just wanted to make sure folks noticed he did everything asked of him. Even on the touched punt that Ray-Ray McCloud didn’t corral, Conley was in their trying to dig it out.
Sidenote: Not a fan of how McCloud went to recover that punt that hit his teammate. Also not a fan of how one jammer gets away and the other one just doesn’t. Just get on the ball.
Anyway, back to Conley, hats off to him for a winning effort.
3rd Down: Mahomes Gets MVP, Defense Was The Star
MVP goes for over 300, gets the award and his third Super Bowl win. Brock Purdy, has been a “when do the wheels fall off” situation all season and he kept it together to come within a score of a Super Bowl Title.
For me though; it was the defenses.
I thought George Karlaftis had a big day. I thought Chris Jones was as advertised as an absolute beast inside. I thought Nick Bolton was everywhere he needed to be. Gimme Justin Reid just showing up all over the place.
And that’s just the Chiefs.
49ers caught a bad beat on the field position post touched punt (I don’t like calling it a muff because it was touched and he was trying to recover it). But Bosa, Warner, Hargrave, Armstead, Brown and Lenior were playing their ass off.
I got a text from a colleague who said the game was awful and I was like, bro, I love this game. Living on the razor’s edge is defense life; and both teams walked it like they talked it.
Good shit.
4th Down: Usher Had Some Fun
We knew we would get Ludacris and Lil Jon. We thought we might get Justin Beiber, we did not. But we did get Alicia Keys.
We also got a shirtless Usher at 46. A very sweaty Usher.
And guess what, they did when he did his outfit change into the children’s Marvel hero costume that comes with abs and pecs.
Great show. Usher has bangers. Let’s not pretend he doesn’t. Bangers from when I was in middle school with “My Way” and “You Make Me Wanna” to through college and he pulled them all out of the bag. “Yeah” is a multi-generational bop that will be played at every wedding forever. With respect to Usher Raymond, personally, I could have used more “Hey Daddy” because that’s my favorite Usher song but overall hell yeah, great pick.
All in all man, this game popped for me. Enjoyed it from the rooter to the tooter. Going to break down this trick play that scored the touchdown for the 49ers and then get into some of the defensive wins that we saw and how they worked. You don’t get 3 sacks without having a good plan and great effort.
You also do need to know the rules of overtime, which will be discussed on the podcast this week.
Cheers!!!
