4 Hard Downs: Meck Mile, Mother's Day, UNC & Helping
I am my parents child, Meck Mile plus Mother's Day un-secret dinner
Mother’s Day is always a big deal. I got my kid setup with flowers and a card to give her mom; even hiding the flowers for her mom under her bed so she can do her own big reveal.
Then we did a breakfast/lunch or as you normal people call it, brunch. My own mom, not my wife, drove to see her sister so this was, honestly, the lowest impact mother’s day of my life.
But, yes I have a new strategy for cards because my handwriting is so bad.
I will spare you the details, but this was a three person situation that was done in time for me to make it to spin at 12:30, then go to get gas and a carwash and still do a mile.
Since I was moving Sunday, let’s go ahead and SPOT THE BALL!!!
1st Down: Meck Mile Debriefing
Was I fast?
No.
Did I get tired very fast?
Yes.
Do I hate that hill on the backend?
Yes.
After.
Before.
I did make a new friend, who I did catch on the kick to finish after giving her about a 50 yard headstart as thanks for run/walking with me.
I’m not a runner, merrily a glorified mall walker, but I did it.
That’s our finish together as people who never met. Probably will never see each other again. We walked to the hydration tent and then we were good. But for a solid 14 minutes we were best buds.
As for the Miller-Hartzell race? Next week’s HITD will have all the details.
Also shout out to Father Yoho for the beer!!
2nd Down: Mother’s Day Dinner
Mother-Daughter brunch went swimmingly. That’s my wife and kid and all of her Mother’s Day Cards plus Teacher Appreciation Day Cards plus flowers from both. My wife had a Bellini. My kid did not, because she is 7, she just had peach juice, I’m not a psycho.
However the star was dinner because we got to do surf and turf as a family.
-Small side salad (who cares?)
-Loaded baked potato
-2” thick reverse seared filets
-Crab legs
-An Old Bay drawn butter
Steak came out great, finished on the grill because I needed the oven for other things.
I was originally planning to do it after bedtime for the kid. A sort of “secret dinner” from my kid but, nah, let’s go ahead and have her involved because it is her mother.
3rd Down: Nothing Secret About UNC’s Situation
Then the CBS interview:
Plus this from Domonique Foxworth and Pablo Torre:
I think the Jordon Hudson situation is all subterfuge. A play-action fake. Look left and go right.
The buyout isn’t in case donors get sick of Jordon. The buyout isn’t in case he wants to leave.
The buyout is to leave UNC with no choice but to hire his son, at least as an interim. At the minimum interim coach. Then the negotiation starts. You’re not going to find a new head coach in June or July. So you deal with what you have.
Steve gets the HC job. Brian gets the DC job. Bill gives up a million dollars after amassing way more than that from the Pats, Browns, Giants and UNC. Yet, he’ll get to do what folks want to do:
Set his kid up for success. Kids, plural.
4th Down: The Thing I Love The Most
I love football. I love watching football. I love talking about football. I love learning new things about football as the game evolves.
I am also realizing how much of my parents DNA is in me (obviously all of it but that’s not the point); with respect to mentoring and teaching. Helping people grow and be better and ultimately pass me in a space I’ve occupied for a while is the thing I love the most.
Not a joke or a bit or a line. Truly this is the best part.
Saturday at the Meck Mile my buddy Miller Yoho introduced me to Chris Hill, runs We Fly Together Productions and is also a teacher who helps kids get into production.
They’re learning so much. They’re already capable with a camera. They’re already good at the edit. They’re confident in where to setup to get good shots.
I got to talk to her twice because she’s great on the cam and editing and knows how to narrate but the big question was, “what do you do when you want to interview someone?”
Hopefully I helped but I gave her my few things that I use at ACC Media Days, Post-Game Pressers and Radio/TV:
-Broad Question that makes people comfortable
-Specific Question about their experience in the moment
-Challenge or Success related to the event
-Thank you and anything else you want to say?
It isn’t about “gotcha” or needling, for me. In this situation she was just a kid out there trying to make sure she was doing it right and the questions are awesome. Not tooting my horn, I just have a big voice, so I did impart that wisdom on her, much like
She’s better than I’ll ever be. I posted her IG but not her full name because I don’t folks looking her up from there since her IG is different from her name. Shout out to Mr. Hill giving these kids a shot at a big event.
I love talking to folks with big dreams and showing them how it can happen.
Cheers!!!
