4 Hard Downs: Father's Day, Tyra Part Two, Portal and I Guess I'm A Swim Dad
Getting Heat Sheets, Tyra Volume Two and more
It took me a bit to get this out because of Father's Day. Relationships, dead dad's, bad dad's, etc.
Heads up for Friday at 1pm eastern, we’ve got a show talking winners and losers of the Transfer Portal heading into the 2024 season; be there.
We are halfway through swim season for my kiddo but I am 100% done with my volunteering. Most of the families do one, if that. I did two and I’m very glad to not have to work the last few meets when they’re away because those feel insane. You don’t know the setup or the layout and the staging area isn’t as concrete as what we have where we can rack every heat and multiple races at once.
Which, I think, officially makes me a Swim Dad. I have the snacks for my kid and wife. I go get the dinner for them so they’re good to go. I meet Jim, Mike, Rick, Pete, Josh and say hi to Annie and Drew and Laney and Ben. I have my big hat like I’m a knockoff Nick Saban. So we might as well SPOT THE BALL!!!
1st Down: Father’s Day Recap
Do it on Saturday or Monday. Not Sunday; actual Father’s Day. That day is going to suck. You’re going to have to go to the pool. You’re going to have to stay at the pool. You’re going to have to do a lot of stuff that isn’t the stuff you would have picked.
And that’s fine, because you love your family and they are showing up for you and that is what it is about. So, my Father’s Day method going forward is stealing time before or after so that you’re prepared for that Sunday of a bunch of stuff they want to do.
Your family loves you and that is what matters; just buy some me time before or after because Sunday is for them.
2nd Down: Explaining The Tyra List
Keon Coleman is tops on my Rooting for you list. This dude is killing it.
Throw Xavier Leggette on this list as well.
Coleman keeps it 100 and Legette sound like my people, I’m hoping they both have a big splash this season.
However, the point here is explaining the Tyra List.
Don’t let me down guys. I’m rooting for you. I think, in general we’re all rooting for you to crush. Don’t show up and be Quentin Johnston, who I was so high on and then boom, only 38 catches for 431 yards; playing with Justin Herbert in all 17 games.
Herbert thinks my guy is really improved and that is what I’m rooting for again, because I don’t want to go Tyra on him in year two.
Do not want another I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed year.
3rd Down: What The Hell Am I Supposed To Do With The Portal
How do I grade the portal action? Clemson minimal action. Colorado a ton of action. So that make’s the Buffs a winner and Tigers losers? But Colorado won’t be better than Clemson this season.
Ole Miss is the lead for 247 in terms of “acquisitions” from the portal. I don’t think they’re going to win the SEC.
I am excited to do the show but we do have to figure out some sort of grading rubric or metric. 42 portal kids, awesome, does that mean you’re going to win the Big 12? Probably not.
College football is very different and evolving and we’ll talk more about it on the podcast tomorrow.
4th Down: I Guess I Am Classical Music Guy Now Too
Backstory, I don’t usually listen to music except for when I run or am cooking or showering so that I have a sense of time. Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of classical music midday or at night to try and calm down.
This shit is amazing.
My kid wants to get into piano and I started out just wanting to know what things sound like because I’ve never been a music guy. It is tight as hell.
Beethoven. Chopin. Alex Varmatt. Claude DeBussy.
It is beautiful and soothing and truly a thing I think, whether my kid really gets into piano, or not, I’m going to continue exploring.
Cheers!!!
Holst’s The Planets. Epic symphony.
Coltrane is my chill out/re-center go-to. Quartet - Ballads is a Sunday AM staple
